CT BASED DIAGNOSIS OF FORTY (40) PATIENTS PRESENTING WITH STROKE.

Abstract

Objective: Aim of this study was to find out the frequency of different types of strokes in patients admitted
toSaidu teachingHospital and record the known risk factors.
Study design:This was a descriptive, observational non-interventional study.
Methodology: 40 consecutive patients with established diagnosis of stroke were studied during period from
October 2006 to March 2007. Proper examination and investigations were done to determine the cause of
stroke. Risk factors profile was recorded on a preplanned structured questionnaire proforma.
Results: 40 consecutive patients admitted to the ward during study period were enrolled.
Age range of the patients was from 35 to 100 years with mean of 67.5 years.
Total no. of male patientswas 28(70%) while12cases (30%) were female.
On CT scan of brain, 30 cases (75%), had cerebral infarction while 6 cases (15%), had cerebral hemorrhage.
Four cases had normal CT scan reported. History of hypertension was present in 29 cases, (72.5 %.) 4 cases
(10%) had history of ischemic heart disease. Rheumatic heart disease was present in 1 case (4 %.)One case
had history of tuberculos spondylitis. Diabetes was present in 6 cases (15 %.) While 10 cases (25%) had a
past history of stroke. In 4cases (10%), family history of stroke was present.
Conclusion: We conclude from our small data that Ischemic stroke is much more common than
Hemorrhagic stroke in patients of Swat District. Males are more likely to be the victims of stroke and the
elderly age group is an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke. Hypertension emerged as a common and
important risk factor in our study followed by diabetes mellitus and ischemic heart disease.
